Dietary supplement label requirements: US checklist

A Supplement Facts panel is one part of a complete dietary supplement label. FDA’s guide also covers identity, net quantity, ingredient labeling, business information and claims. Use the generator to draft a panel, then review the entire package against the rules for your product.

Review the whole package

Use FDA’s labeling guide chapter by chapter. Collect the serving size and amount per serving, ingredient names, required business details, net contents and all proposed claims before approving artwork. Check the placement and format requirements against the actual printed package.

Check botanical ingredient naming

21 CFR 101.4(h) addresses botanical naming and requires the plant part to be identified. Ask your manufacturer to reconcile the ingredient specification and the label, especially when a botanical is supplied as a powder or extract.

Treat the panel as a draft until reviewed

Check your panel against 21 CFR 101.36, including serving information, applicable daily values and the treatment of ingredients without an established daily value. A generated graphic cannot determine ingredient legality, claim substantiation or every product-specific labeling requirement.
