How is protein powder manufactured?
Protein powder production includes making the protein ingredient and, separately, blending and packing the finished consumer product. For whey, dairy processing separates a protein-containing liquid, concentrates it and dries it. A finished-product manufacturer may buy that ingredient rather than make it from milk.
Whey starts as a liquid ingredient stream
U.S. Dairy describes whey as the protein-containing liquid separated from curds during cheesemaking, followed by pasteurization and drying. This example explains whey; it should not be treated as the process for pea, soy or every other protein ingredient.
Concentration and drying produce the ingredient
The US Dairy Export Council’s process diagrams show clarification, pasteurization, ultrafiltration and drying routes for whey ingredients, and a separate route for native whey from milk. Ask the ingredient supplier which route and specification apply to your material.
Define what the contract manufacturer will do
For a finished protein supplement, ask whether the quote covers ingredient sourcing, blending, flavor development, filling and packaging. Request the material specification, allergen controls, batch testing and release responsibilities. These are purchasing questions, not a claim that every facility in a powder directory performs dairy fractionation.
