How we built this list
We considered the 109 vitamin manufacturers we list in the USA. A company is on the list only when all five of these hold:
- It holds an active GMP certification or licence on a public registry we check. Informed Manufacturer alone does not count; it is not a GMP audit.
- It lists a company website.
- FDA inspections are matched to it, and the latest one ended on or after November 1, 2021 (the last 5 years) and was classified No Action Indicated (NAI).
- No matched FDA inspection, ever, was classified Official Action Indicated (OAI).
- No matched FDA recall, ever, was Class I.
Membership in this list also requires one of two things: the company’s USDA Organic certificate lists vitamin or mineral items (a registry record we found in the USDA Organic Integrity Database; it covers organic items only), or the company’s own website says it makes vitamin and mineral products (the company’s claim, not a record we verified). A company is on the list when it holds an active GMP certification or licence on a public registry we check, lists a website, has FDA inspections matched to it whose latest ended within the last 5 years and was classified No Action Indicated, has no matched inspection ever classified Official Action Indicated, and has no matched Class I recall. Qualifying companies are ordered by the number of independent registries that list their certifications, then by the fewest recalls matched in FDA data, then by FDA inspections with no action indicated in the last 5 years, then by the most recent inspection, then by name.
Can a manufacturer pay to be on this list?
No. Featured listings are paid placement on directory pages and have no effect here. Featured status is not an input to this list; who qualifies and in what order comes only from public records.
Why isn’t a company I know on the list?
It may not meet one of the criteria, or we may not have matched its records. We match FDA inspections and recalls to companies by name and address, and a company with no matched FDA inspection cannot qualify, so a missing company is not a judgment of it. Only the 109 vitamin manufacturers we list in the USA are considered; manufacturers can ask to be listed.
